016-11 "New" Non-Expiring Token Trailer Fleet License Plates

Registration and Title Bulletin - #016-11

Date: April 15, 2011

To:

All County Tax Assessor-Collectors

Subject: "New" Non-Expiring Token Trailer Fleet License Plates

PURPOSE

To notify you of the changes to Token Trailer Registration in Texas.

DETAILS

Token trailers will no longer be required to display the month and year of expiration on the license plate. The receipts issued out of the Registration and Title System (RTS) and the Texas International Registration Plan (TxIRP) System will be proof of valid registration and must be carried in the pulling unit or in the trailer, if applicable. This change was implemented at the request of our industry partners, so that motor carriers will not have to track down their trailers every year at renewal to put on a new sticker.

Changes have been made to both the RTS used by the 254 Texas County Tax Assessor-Collectors and the TxIRP System.

Token Trailers registered through RTS will receive a:

  • License plate with no sticker attached
  • Separate Renewal Notice and Registration Receipt for each trailer

Note: Currently, Token Trailers registered through RTS only have the option of a 1-year registration period; however, the option for 1 - 3 year registration periods will be available Summer 2011

Token Trailers registered through the Token Trailer Fleet Application in the TxIRP System will:

  • Have the option to register for 1 – 5 years (no more fixed 5 Year period)
  • Receive a single Renewal Notice/Invoice for entire fleet
  • Receive a separate Registration Receipt for each trailer (the unladen and gross weight for the Token Trailer is longer included on the receipt)

Over the next seven years, existing Token Trailer plates will be replaced with the "new" 7-character, non-expiring Token Trailer Fleet plates. Until that time you may see the following, which may be valid:

  • License plate with an expired Month/Year sticker
  • License plate with the sticker visibly removed
  • License plate with a pre-printed Month/Year sticker location box (no sticker attached)

Important: The receipts issued out of the RTS and/or the TxIRP System will be proof of valid registration and must be carried in the pulling unit or in the trailer, if applicable.
